With subclass 500 visa you can

  • You can work up to 48 hours a fortnight during your course of study or training is in session ( If you studying in a masters by research or doctoral degree, and their families, have no work limit).

How long you can stay with subclass 500 visa

Up to 5 years your can stay in Australia with subclass 500. Your course and its length will determine the length of stay

Generally maximum period of 3 year student visa will be granted for primary school children’s starting their enrolment in years 1-4.

Extension of subclass 500 visa

You must apply for a new Student visa to continue studying in Australia

You may eligible for a visitor visa (subclass 600) if your student visa going to expire before your graduation. You will need a letter from your college / university with the date of your graduation.

You may be qualify for a Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485 If you hold or held a Australian student visa and full fill particular qualifications in Australia in the last six months.

The visa fee from AUD1,600.00 for the main applicant, unless they are exempt.

There is also a charge for each family member who applies for the visa.

Visa fee for qualified Pacific Island and Timor-Leste Student and Student Guardian visa applicants

Effective From 22 March 2025, eligible applicants from Pacific Island and Timor-Leste citizens only need to pay lesser visa fee, who submit a valid Student or Student Guardian visa application.

Eligible applicants are identified by the valid passport from the specified countries used in the application when you apply.

Family members are also eligible for the lesser visa fee. authorities base this on the passport of the primary applicant (or visa holder who satisfies the primary visa criteria).

The primary applicant must hold a valid passport issued by one of the following countries:

  • Republic of the Marshall Islands
  • Samoa
  • Solomon Islands
  • Timor-Leste
  • Tonga
  • Tuvalu
  • Vanuatu.
  • Federated States of Micronesia
  • Fiji
  • Kiribati
  • Nauru
  • Palau
  • Papua New Guinea

Eligible Pacific Island and Timor-Leste citizens who applied between 1 July 2024 and 21 March 2025 can apply for a partial refund of the cost until 22 June 2025. See Getting a refund.

Include family with your study visa application (subclass 500)

If you wish to include your family with your student visa application You can add them. your spouse, your or your partner’s unmarried dependent child under 18 years of age can include.

If your child turned 18 years at the time your visa is finalised Australian visa authorities cannot grant a Student visa for your child. Your child need to apply for their own visa.

You must declare your family members in your Student visa application even if they do not plan to travel with you to Australia. If you do not do this, your family members will not be eligible for a Student visa to join you in Australia.

Your family members can also apply as a subsequent entrant (at a later time, separate from your application) in ImmiAccount.

Family members who apply for the visa must meet our requirements for health and character.

Check the annual school costs you will need to pay for any dependent children to go to either public or private schools in Australia.

Apply inside Australia

You can be in or outside Australia when you apply for this visa and when Authorities decide on your application. If you are in Australia you must hold an eligible substantive visa.

Packaged courses

Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) for each course need to submit to the Australian authorities. Authorities consider your last course as part of the course package is your main course of study. Authorities consider your main course of study to work out what financial and English language skills proof you must submit to them.

If your visa application includes a package of courses, course gaps must be less than two calendar months, unless the first course finishes at the end of the standard academic year and the next course commences at the beginning of the standard academic year.

For example, the academic year generally ends in November and starts again in February the following year, three to four months is an acceptable gap between courses. 

Standard visa grant periods apply to packaged courses.

Process time of subclass 500 submitted outside Australia

Australian visa authorities consider and process student visa applications as two types either ‘Priority 1 – High’ or ‘Priority 2 – Standard’ processing according to Ministerial Direction No. 111

‘Priority 1 – High’ applications will be processed more faster than ‘Priority 2 – Standard’. Approval or Refusal of visas don’t have any connection with your priority level .

Priority 1 – High (subclass 500 )

  • School students
  • Non-award sector students, including short-term exchange students
  • Standalone ELICOS students
  • Department of Defence sponsored students
  • Foreign and Australian government scholarship students
  • Transnational education students
  • Students from the Pacific and Timor-Leste**
  • Subsequent entrants where the application includes a minor (a child <18 years of age)
  • Students enrolled with a TAFE provider (or specifically identified TAFE courses for Charles Darwin University)
  • Students enrolled in a recognised Pilot training course*
  • Students enrolled in Postgraduate research (PhD) courses
  • Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) sponsored students

Higher Education and Vocational Education and Training students who do not meet any of the categories listed above also includes in Priority 1 – High.

Diploma of Aviation (Instrument Rating), and Diploma of Aviation (Flight Instructor)*Pilot training courses means the Diploma of Aviation (Commercial Pilot Licence – Aeroplane), Diploma of Aviation (Commercial Pilot Licence – Helicopter),

**Passport holders and residents of: Cook Islands, Fiji, French Polynesia, Kiribati, Marshall Islands, Micronesia, Nauru, New Caledonia, Niue, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Timor-Leste, Tonga, Tuvalu, Vanuatu.

Priority 2 – Standard ( subclass 500 )

Priority 2 – Standard’ includes subsequent entrants where the application does not include a minor. It also includes any other Student visa application not listed above.

Travel restrictions ( subclass 500)

You can travel outside Australia and return as many times as you want while your subclass 500 visa is valid.

The time you spend outside Australia does not a reason for extend the visa.
