The Migration (Subclass 482 visas English Language Test Requirements) Instrument 2025 (LIN 25/082) commences on 13 September 2025
The Migration (English Language Test Requirements for Subclass 482 Visas) Instrument 2025 (LIN 25/082) will take effect on 13 September 2025, replacing the 2024 version. This new instrument sets out which English tests are accepted, the minimum scores applicants must achieve, how long results remain valid, and the circumstances in which exemptions apply. These rules cover both the Specialist Skills and Core Skills streams of the Subclass 482 visa.
The list of recognised assessments now includes IELTS Academic and General Training, PTE Academic, TOEFL iBT, OET, CELPIP General, LanguageCert Academic, and the Michigan English Test. A key change is the introduction of the Single Skill Retake option, allowing applicants to re-sit only the section of a test where they did not meet the required standard. All results must have been obtained within the three years leading up to the visa application.
Certain applicants are exempt from the testing requirement. These include citizens of the UK, USA, Canada, Ireland, and New Zealand, as well as individuals who have completed at least five years of full-time education delivered in English. Exemptions also apply to professionals who have already satisfied equivalent language standards for their registration or licensing, high-income intra-company transferees earning AUD 96,400 or more annually, and people engaged in diplomatic or consular positions.
The instrument also provides transitional arrangements: test results achieved between 13 September 2022 and 12 September 2025 will continue to be accepted if they meet the prescribed benchmarks. The Department of Home Affairs consulted with relevant industry and professional organisations before finalising these updates.
Overall, these changes are intended to give applicants more flexibility, ensure fairness, and better reflect the current agreements between the government and approved testing providers.
